About you
Having Parkinson’s myself, I know first-hand the importance of using exercise as a tool to maintain mobility and function. My background as an exercise professional has empowered me in dealing with a Parkinson’s diagnosis and helped me reduce the impact of the symptoms in my daily life.
I trained as an FLexercise teacher over 30 years ago in Ireland and have been teaching community classes ever since first in Ireland, then Oxford and since the late 1990s in London. I have taught all age groups from university students to women in their 80s. I currently focus on teaching classes for over 50s. Through teaching my classes I have observed at first hand the health benefits of exercise both for people with Parkinson’s and without; aches and pains are reduced, balance improves, mental health issues are less acute, class members become more body aware and most importantly people have fun and enjoy the social experience and make friends for life.
After my Parkinson’s diagnosis it was a natural progression to expand my expertise to teach exercise for people with Parkinson’s, and I trained using the PWR!Moves system in 2022. I have been teaching exercise to people with Parkinson’s for 5 years, and now teach 3 group classes in SW London area. With my PD clients I have seen amazing improvements in quality of life and particularly in function, including improving walking from taking a break every 10 minutes to now walking for 40 minutes; getting back on a tricycle after 2 years after mainly been house bound. The group class is also a great way to socialise, for class participants and carers/partners alike; we share knowledge, chat and have a laugh after class with refreshments.
I have combined a career as a geologist with being a FLexercise/Parkinson's Exercise instructor. Since settling in London in 1995, and taking up a lecturing post at Imperial College, London I continued to teach FLexercise, which has now expanded to teaching PWRMoves! Having these two careers has been fundamental to who I am and my well-being; it helps me to conquer Parkinson's symptoms through exercise and to continue to engage in the many outdoor activities in life that are important to me.
Qualifications PWR!Moves Certified Instructor; Bagot Stack dip; REPS level 3 Group Exercise Teacher; currently CIMPSA registered.
