I teach Parkinson's exercise classes using the PWR!Moves method in Kew and Hampton Hill in SW London and additionally teach others one-to-one both in their homes and by zoom.
As a person living with Parkinson's, I know first-hand the importance of using exercise as a tool to maintain mobility and function. My background as an exercise professional has empowered me in dealing with a Parkinson's diagnosis and helped me reduce the impact of the symptoms on my daily life.
I trained as an FLexercise teacher over 30 years ago in Ireland and have been teaching community classes ever since first in Ireland, then Oxford UK and more recently in London UK. I have taught all age groups from university students to women in their 80s. I currently focus on teaching classes for over 50s. Through teaching my classes I have observed at first hand the health benefits of exercise; aches and pains are reduced, balance improves, mental health issues are less acute, class members become more body aware and most importantly people have fun and enjoy the social experience and make friends for life.
With my PD clients I have seen amazing improvements in quality of life and particularly in function, including improving walking from taking a break every 10 minutes to now walking for 40 minutes; getting back on a tricycle after 2 years after mainly been house bound. The group class is also a great way to socialise, for class participants and carers/partners alike; we share knowledge, chat and have a laugh after class accompanied by refreshments!
I have combined a career as a geologist with being a FLexercise/Parkinson's Exercise instructor. My main career as an academic geologist was mostly at Imperial College, London, but I continued to teach FLexercise alongside Geology. Subsequent to getting a diagnosis of Parkinson's I have expanded my exercise work to teaching PWRMoves! and retired from Imperial. Having these two careers has been fundamental to who I am and my well-being; it helps me to conquer Parkinson's symptoms through exercise and to continue to engage in the many outdoor activities in life that are important to me.
